[78898] Iran threatens response to escalation in Lebanon; American mediation efforts encounter difficulties
Regional tension: Iran warns against continued attacks in Lebanon
Against the backdrop of reports of a security escalation, the Iranian Armed Forces warned Israel today that "the continuation of crimes in Lebanon will not be something we can tolerate." This statement comes in parallel to failed diplomatic efforts by the Trump administration to reach a settlement.
Collapse of mediation efforts
According to reports in Axios, mediation attempts by American diplomat Marco Rubio have lost momentum after failing to lead to an agreement. According to American officials cited in 'Al Jazeera', Washington's proposal was based on halting Hezbollah attacks in exchange for Israel refraining from strikes in Beirut. These officials claimed that "Hezbollah is acting according to Tehran's instructions and has no interest in the welfare of the Lebanese people."
Tehran's position and the Lebanese position
On the Iranian side, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei emphasized that "the US and the Zionist entity cannot be viewed as two separate sides" and that everything happening in Lebanon is directly linked to the US. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi added that "a ceasefire between Iran and the US is a comprehensive ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon" (according to the Al Mayadeen channel).
On the other hand, officials in the Lebanese parliament clarified that they guarantee Hezbollah's commitment to a ceasefire, but demanded that Israel be the first to stop its attacks. At the same time, it was reported that Israel requested approval from the American administration to carry out extensive strikes in Beirut, against the backdrop of its frustration with the organization's continued firing at civilians.
