According to the Qatari state-funded network قناة الجزيرة (Al Jazeera), the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency received reports that a cargo ship was targeted by a projectile near Dubai, with no casualties reported. The ship's master reported that the vessel sustained damage from a suspected unknown projectile.

The incident resulted in a blaze on the vessel. Iraqi news channel واحد عراق (One Iraq), which often reflects regional resistance and anti-Western narratives, amplified the UKMTO report stating the ship's master confirmed the container vessel was hit by an unknown projectile and a small fire broke out. This update was also prominently circulated by Al Jazeera.

The vessel was subsequently identified as belonging to the German shipping operator Hapag-Lloyd. Al Jazeera reported a direct statement from the company confirming that a fire broke out on board one of its ships after it was hit by shrapnel in Gulf waters.
