Russian attack on merchant ships in the Black Sea: There are casualties

During the night of June 22, 2026, Russian forces attacked civilian merchant ships in the Black Sea. According to reports from the Ukrainian Navy (the primary source cited by TSN and Ukrayinska Pravda), the main ship hit was the VICTRESS, sailing under the flag of Panama. As a result of the strike by a Russian drone, a large-scale fire broke out on the ship.

TSN and UA.NEWS report that among the nine crew members on board, who were citizens of Egypt, Turkey, and India, there was a loss of life: a 58-year-old Egyptian crew member was killed in the attack. The Ukrainian Navy carried out a complex rescue operation under fire and evacuated the rest of the crew from the burning ship.

In addition to the attack on the VICTRESS, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Kuleba noted, as reported in Ukrayinska Pravda, that Russia attacked two additional ships under the flags of Palau and Belize. Those ships sustained damage but continued on their route, and as of now, no casualties have been reported among their crew members.
