During the night of June 16-17, 2026, the Russian military launched a massive wave of airstrikes using UAVs against civilian targets across Ukraine. According to data from the Air Force of Ukraine as reported on UA Stream, Russia launched 119 UAVs, of which 97 were intercepted or neutralized, while 20 hit 11 different locations across the country.
In the city of Zaporizhzhia, according to reports from regional authorities (OVA) and stations like TCH news, severe damage was recorded to civilian infrastructure, including educational institutions, a shopping center, and residential buildings. As a result of the attack, one person was killed and between 7 and 14 wounded were reported (depending on the source). The channel Hromadske noted that a fire broke out in a shopping center and caused significant damage to the city's national university.
In the Sumy region, according to Real War and other media outlets, a boarding school and a horse-riding school were attacked. The attack targeted the institution's stables, where horses were killed. Officials emphasized that this was an "attack on an entity serving children." At the same time, in Kharkiv and the Bogodukhov area, it was reported by Kharkiv life that there were four wounded, including men and women suffering from "acute stress reactions" due to bombings near residential areas and public institutions.
The Censor.NET analysis center highlighted reports of damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra church, while displaying remains of a UAV bearing markings of a Russian economic zone, indicating the use of locally produced components. Simultaneously, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that alongside the rear-area attacks, dozens of Russian ground assault attempts on the eastern front were repelled, with heavy casualties to the Russian side estimated at 1,260 killed in the last 24 hours.
