G7 Summit in France: Progress in the Political and Security Spheres
During the G7 summit in the town of Evian, France, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, held a series of high-level meetings with Western leaders. According to reports from Zelenskiy / Official, the main focus was on strengthening Ukraine's air defense systems, granting licenses for missile production, and preparing a support package for winter. The President expressed gratitude to the leaders of the countries, including US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, for their support in applying pressure on Russia.
Trilateral Meeting and Support for Reconstruction
Україна Online reported that Zelenskyy held a secret meeting with Trump and Macron, during which he presented the American President with photos of the destruction of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra cathedral, which reportedly led to a firm response from Trump. Regarding reconstruction, Zelenskyy confirmed that France has committed to assisting in the restoration of the sarcophagus at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and Switzerland will assist in the restoration of the Lavra, as noted in Оперативний ЗСУ.
Progress in Integration with the European Union
Concurrent with the summit, Eurointegration notes that on June 15, 2026, the "Fundamentals Cluster" was officially opened in the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in his meeting with President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen that he hopes to maintain a high dynamic and open five additional negotiation chapters as early as this coming July.
Opposing Positions and Future Concerns
Conversely, official Russian sources, as cited in Новини: Україна, expressed firm opposition to the move, claiming that Ukraine's accession to the EU would lead to the "collapse of the Union" and would serve to militarize Europe. Zelenskyy himself, in an interview with Новини.LIVE, emphasized the need for an accelerated process, fearing that Russia would attempt to sabotage the chances of accession as time passes.
