On May 6, 2026, Ukraine marks Infantry Day, a date dedicated to the warriors who constitute the "backbone of the army," as noted on the official channels of Zelenskiy / Official. This day was established to commemorate the Cossack victory at the Battle of Yellow Waters (Zhovti Vody) in 1648, and highlights the decisive role of the warriors on the ground in maintaining the country's sovereignty.
President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, emphasized that "Ukraine's front line and positions are always where our infantrymen are," according to his official statement. Zelenskyy noted that the government and the Ministry of Defense are promoting steps to strengthen these units, including improved contracts, additional financial resources, and increased technological supply of drones and essential equipment.
Senior commanders and military personnel echoed a similar message. General Oleksandr Syrskyi noted that his priorities include integrating modern technologies to reduce risks for the warriors, but emphasized that "the final point is always made by the infantry." The DeepState channel highlighted the tactical importance of physical presence on the ground, noting that units such as the 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade continue to need public support.
At the same time, the leadership of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade noted that although technologies and drones strengthen capabilities, "no technology will replace a person in a position." Commanders in various units, including the 24th Brigade, emphasized that despite the advancement of technological warfare, these are flesh-and-blood warriors who carry tens of kilograms of equipment in the most difficult conditions.
Official and military figures from all over Ukraine, including Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and the Military Intelligence (GUR), used the day to thank the warriors for their steadfast resistance in the face of the Russian invasion, which has been ongoing for over 12 years, and to bow their heads in memory of those who fell in battle.
