Ukraine tightens enforcement and oversight of the Ukrainian language

Against the backdrop of the ongoing war, Ukraine's State Language Commissioner, Olena Ivanovska, is prioritizing the strengthening of the Ukrainian language's status in the public sphere and security branches. As reported by Труха⚡️Україна (a channel identified with distinctly pro-Ukrainian positions), Ivanovska is calling for the appointment of a special representative on behalf of the Language Commission within the Armed Forces of Ukraine (ZSU), with the goal of curbing what she defines as a "Russian propaganda narrative regarding a non-state language in the military."

At the same time, the Commission's activities are focused on cultural and educational institutions. According to UA Stream, Ivanovska pointed out that the "Dark Sofit" theater in the capital, Kyiv, continues to stage performances in the Russian language, in violation of government policy. Additionally, the Commissioner emphasized that the institution she heads "will stand in defense of the language law provisions" in the context of the education system, in the face of attempts at legislative changes.

On an organizational level, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture announced that starting in 2027, the staffing of the Language Commissioner's Secretariat will be significantly expanded. According to the Deputy Minister, Bohdana Layuk, this is a strategic move to strengthen linguistic policy.

However, Ivanovska warns that despite the progress, the country is still "held captive by inertia" and suffers from a lack of adequate budgets to implement the national language policy. All reports indicate the determination of the Ukrainian authorities to push out the use of the Russian language as part of the overall national effort during the wartime period.
