The Fight Against Economic Corruption and State Revenue
According to reports from Times of Ukraine and Україна Online, law enforcement agencies in Ukraine have managed to thwart a massive VAT refund fraud scheme. According to the report by Ху Київ, the integrated system of the Financial Monitoring agency and the Bureau of Economic Security (BEB) identified a network of "shell companies" that operated to create artificial tax credit, thereby allowing the state to save nearly 190 million hryvnias. At the same time, UA Stream reported that a jewelry company in the Vinnytsia region was forced to pay over 11 million hryvnias after being exposed in a tax evasion scheme.
Government Revenue and Expenditure Data
Censor.net reports that at the beginning of 2026, revenues of over one trillion hryvnias were recorded for the state budget, with the tax and customs authorities exceeding expectations. Alongside this, government spending on support programs remains a central issue: according to "Ukrainska Pravda", the government spent about 19 billion hryvnias last year on the "Zelenskyy's Thousand" program, while this year about 2 billion hryvnias were invested in the "National Cashback" program.
Economic Policy and Challenges
On the economic-policy front, Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko expects that large and small privatization will yield about 13 billion hryvnias for the state treasury in 2026. Conversely, the "Bykvu" channel reports on difficulties with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding the demand to abolish the tax exemption on packages from abroad worth up to 150 euros, an issue that remains controversial with the government.
In addition, the "Novyny.LIVE" channel criticizes the reform in the pharmaceutical sector, claiming that the government's attempts to limit profit margins have led to "shadow" markets and shortages of certain medicines, while harming local production in favor of importers.
