Wave of arrests and investigations in Turkey: Corruption in municipalities and kidnapping of a senior official

The law enforcement system in Turkey is in turmoil following a wave of police operations against mayors and senior officials in local government, accused of crimes of bribery, fraud, and integrity violations. According to reports on TRT Haber, 18 suspects were arrested in the Silifke City Council, including Mayor Mustafa Turgut, on suspicion of involvement in corruption scandals involving tenders and real estate. Simultaneously, gdh reported a similar operation in the Adalar City Council, where 41 suspects were arrested, including Mayor Ali Ercan Akpolat, on suspicion of managing a criminal organization and receiving bribes.

Another unusual event took place in Istanbul, where the Deputy General Manager of the municipality's cultural company (Kültür A.Ş), Erhan Karal, was kidnapped. According to A Haber, Karal was kidnapped by unknown persons in front of his home, held bound in an abandoned building in Tuzla, and tortured. Following a rescue operation by police forces, he was located suffering from injuries but in stable condition. gdh notes that seven suspects were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the kidnapping, including former employees and contractors who performed work for the municipality.

In the political sphere of the CHP party, the situation remains tense. According to Sputnik Türkiye, Tanju Özcan, the Mayor of Bolu, resigned from the party after being removed from his position following a series of criminal investigations, including allegations of "extortion" and "fraud." At the same time, reports in gdh indicate that former Mayor of Izmir, Cemil Tugay, is involved in complex legal proceedings within the party, illustrating the internal instability in the ranks of the opposition.

Alongside these, security authorities continued operations against terrorism and organized crime. gdh reported the arrest of 70 suspects for activities in the ISIS organization across 26 provinces in Turkey. Additionally, Haber Gündem stated that the government, led by Minister Ekin Gürlek, launched an operation against a criminal organization known as the "Gang with the Hats" (Şapkalılar Çetesi), during which dozens of suspects were arrested, including lawyers, as part of the government's struggle to "cut off the roots of crime."
