The Race for the Fenerbahçe Presidency: Hakan Safi's 'Revolution' Vision
The election campaign at the Turkish sports giant Fenerbahçe is heating up, as candidate Hakan Safi sets a high bar for expectations. In a series of statements published on several Telegram channels, including Fenerbahçe Ruhu and FENERBAHÇE AŞKI, Safi promised to bring "global superstars" to the club as a top priority, noting his intention to build an independent management model: "The club needs a leader who will define the structure. Fenerbahçe does not need technical managers, but professionals who know the league."
In the management sector, Safi is working to strengthen his list. According to a report by journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, Safi has added Ömer Topbaş, a key figure from the Sadettin Saran administration period, to his board of directors list. Safi also criticized the club's institutional conduct over the last two decades, arguing on Fenerbahçe Ruhu that Fenerbahçe had been involved in unnecessary conflicts with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), and that it was time for a change in lobbying and communication methods.
At the same time, TGRT HABER reports on a "war of lists" between Safi and veteran candidate Aziz Yıldırım. The tension between the two is also reflected in the media, with reports of a struggle over prestigious signings – including rumors about a star from Marseille and a notable goalkeeper swap – and claims that Yıldırım is refraining from responding to Safi's statements.
Safi did not hesitate to attack the club's physical infrastructure as well, expressing dissatisfaction with the renovation of the Fenerbahçe stadium: "They used red stones, I am not even satisfied with that." Safi's promises for a total change, backed by an aggressive approach ("Money is money, courage is courage"), position him as a significant factor in the current election campaign in Turkey.
