Cost of Living Crisis: The Gap Between Wages and Actual Inflation
Against the backdrop of global economic changes, pressing questions are arising regarding the earning capacity of workers in the face of the cost of living. While official data presents a certain picture, the reality on the ground may be completely different.
According to Borsa Haber Hisse, a channel focused on market analysis and investments, since September 2021 the minimum wage has increased 10-fold, while the official consumer price index has increased only 7-fold. However, the channel argues that "the average index is far from describing what the poor experience", since the true inflation for weaker strata is expressed in a sharp rise in food, rent, and utility prices, which effectively leads to an erosion of purchasing power despite wage increases.
At the same time, TGRT HABER, a Turkish news channel with a general orientation, reports that the crisis is not limited to the local market alone. According to the report, "rental prices in Europe are skyrocketing" to such an extent that they eclipse the average minimum wage on the continent, creating heavy economic pressure on the working class even in developed countries.
The gap between government data and public sentiment remains a central issue in economic discourse, with both sources emphasizing that the basic expense basket constitutes the true indicator of the economic situation of workers.
