[47978] Storm in Turkey over the stray dog issue: Calls for severe solutions
Rising public debate over the danger of stray dogs in Turkey
The public debate in Turkey regarding the danger of stray dogs has reached a new peak following a series of severe incidents. On May 3, 2026, calls for immediate action were raised by political figures and media outlets.
DoğruHaber, a news site identified with conservative-Islamic positions that promotes an agenda of protecting the community from public hazards, published a harsh headline this morning under the title "Children are torn to pieces by dogs still roaming the streets", referring to the situation in Van, while criticizing the lack of enforcement and handling of the problem on the streets.
At the same time, the political system is responding to public pressure. Haber Gündem, a channel reporting on current events and politics in Turkey, reported that Mustafa Destici, chairman of the BBP party, explicitly called for taking drastic measures. According to Destici, "We no longer have patience for another child brutally murdered by stray dogs," and added that dogs without owners must be put to sleep.
The issue continues to be a point of friction between animal rights organizations, which call for solutions of sterilization and rehabilitation, and parts of the public and the political system that demand aggressive intervention to eliminate the immediate danger to children's safety on the streets.
