Escalation in Political Tensions: Russia Imposes Extensive Import Restrictions on Products from Armenia
Tensions between Russia and Armenia have reached a new peak in recent days with a series of economic restrictions by the authorities in Moscow. Rospotrebnadzor announced the suspension of the sale of wines and cognac from several Armenian producers, including "Proshyan Brandy Factory" (Vedi-Alco) and "Shahnazaryan Wine and Brandy House," claiming that the products do not meet "mandatory requirements." These restrictions join a previous ban on the import of "Jermuk" mineral water and restrictions on the import of flowers, fruits, and vegetables imposed by Rosselkhoznadzor.
In Russian media outlets affiliated with the government line, the decisions are presented as technical steps, but political commentators link this directly to the change in Yerevan's foreign policy. Doctor of Political Science Andrey Pinchuk, as published in Tsargrad, argues that Russia is underestimating the geopolitical shifts in Armenia since the rise of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to power. Simultaneously, the Zone AP Telegram channel harshly criticized Pashinyan, claiming he is leading an "unfriendly policy" toward Moscow despite Russian economic assistance.
In parallel with the economic moves, internal political drama is being recorded in Armenia. Sputnik (Neighboring Countries) reports the opening of a criminal case on charges of treason against Andranik Tevanyan, a candidate for the opposition party "Prosperous Armenia." The event occurred after a raid by the National Security Service on his offices.
TASS news agency notes that Armenia's relations with Russia have deteriorated significantly, with Moscow rejecting claims of a Russian disinformation campaign and pointing an accusing finger at Pashinyan. As of now, Armenia depends on Russia for about 85% of its agricultural exports, a fact that Kolokol XXI warns could lead to a severe economic crisis in the country.
