[68580] Sharp Escalation on the Front: Massive Drone Attacks in Russia and Panic in the Baltic States
Hot War: Drone Attacks and Fear of International Escalation
A significant escalation in the war in Ukraine was recorded overnight, as the Russian Defense Ministry reported the interception of 273 Ukrainian drones across Russia. The attack focused on oil and energy infrastructure: according to Readovka and Mash, fires were caused at refineries in the Nizhny Novgorod region and facilities in Stavropol. Reuters, as reported by ASTRA, notes that the latest series of strikes has incapacitated about a quarter of Russia's oil refining capacity.
At the same time, tensions reached the Baltic states. In Lithuania, a high air alert was declared after suspicious objects were identified, and the country's leadership, including President Gitanas Nausėda, were evacuated to shelters, according to reports by SHOT and NEXTA Live. The Lithuanian military stated it had been warned by Belarus about approaching aircraft but was unable to locate them afterwards.
Against this background, the Kremlin reacted sharply to threats by Lithuanian officials to attack Kaliningrad. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov defined the threats as "bordering on madness" in an interview with Vesti. Sergey Lavrov added with contempt that "they simply exist," referring to Baltic statesmen. Concurrently, Russian Intelligence (SVR) claimed that Ukraine is using the territory of the Baltic states to launch attacks deep into Russia, a claim rejected outright by Riga and Kyiv.
On the ground front, fighting continues at high intensity. The military blogger "Rybar" notes that Ukraine is increasing offensive attempts inside Russia. On the other hand, Russian correspondents such as "Operation Z" report Russian strikes on military and logistical targets in Odesa, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Meanwhile, talks continue in Beijing between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who jointly called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis and an end to American "hegemony."
