Moscow celebrates 91 years of the Metro

The Russian capital is currently marking 91 years since the establishment of the Moscow Metro. As part of the celebrations, the Moscow Department of Transport reports that today the Metro serves over 8 million passengers daily, with approximately 2.4 billion trips per year. Since 2010, the Metro network has grown by a factor of 1.7 and now includes 306 stations.

As part of the commemorative events, a festive train parade was held on the Ring Line (Koltsevaya). As reported by the "Moscow" News Agency, nine train models are participating in the parade, ranging from the historic "Sokolniki" retro train to the state-of-the-art "Moscow-2026" train, which is being presented to the general public for the first time. Moscow 24 channel added that this is part of a large-scale event highlighting the modernization of transport in the city.

Alongside the parade, passengers were surprised by a new design initiative. The Novosti Moskvy channel and Moskva Live report that temporary and "amusing" navigation signs with unconventional inscriptions have been installed in stations and carriages. The VSM? channel defined the change as "cuteness" (milota) and called for the special design to be kept permanently. These visual changes are expected to remain active until May 29.

Official sources, including the head of the Department of Transport Maxim Liksutov, note that approximately 91% of residents currently live near stations of the railway network. While most reports focused on the celebrations, the "Barrel of Black Caviar" channel, known for its critical line toward the Russian government, noted the event neutrally while using the term "cute inscriptions," without deviating from the technical report on the project's end date.
