[58724] Large-scale air attack between Russia and Ukraine: hundreds of UAVs and damage to infrastructure
Significant air escalation: hundreds of UAVs in the skies over Russia and Ukraine
Over the past 24 hours, a sharp escalation in fighting between Russia and Ukraine has been recorded, manifested in extensive air attacks by both sides. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russia's air defense forces intercepted 286 Ukrainian UAVs overnight between May 12 and 13, over a series of Russian regions including Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kursk, Rostov, Yaroslavl and others, as well as over the Crimean Peninsula.
According to reports from Russian "government" channels, as part of the response, Russia launched a combined and sustained air attack against Ukraine, using hundreds of "Geran" (Shahed) UAVs. According to Ukrainian GUR intelligence, this is a planned attack designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense systems in anticipation of further ballistic and cruise missile strikes. These strikes led to severe damage to energy and industrial infrastructure in the cities of Kharkiv, Poltava, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, and Sumy, with large areas left without electricity.
According to Ukrainian and international media, the Ukrainians report that they intercepted and disrupted 111 out of 139 UAVs launched against them. Ukrainian officials, including President Zelensky, confirm that the Russian strikes are targeting railway infrastructure, energy, and government buildings, and have claimed the lives of at least 8 people in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
On the Russian side, Ukrainian attacks caused fires at several sensitive facilities. According to the governor of the Astrakhan region, a fire broke out at the Astrakhan gas plant as a result of falling UAV debris. According to reports from the "Astra" network and satellite analysis, an oil terminal at the port of Taman in the Krasnodar region was also hit. The Governor of Yaroslavl confirmed that UAV debris hit an industrial facility in the city, with no loss of life.
Sources identified with both sides agree that the tactic has shifted to prolonged and systematic combat against the other side's critical infrastructure. Russian military commentators claim that Russia has shifted to systematically "dismantling" Ukraine's military and logistical systems, while Ukrainian officials emphasize the danger to major cities and the shortage of defensive measures in the face of endless waves of attacks.
