Attempted assault on Sverdlovsk Oblast Governor Denis Pasler during May 1st celebrations in Yekaterinburg
During a celebratory event marking May 1st near the "Yekaterinburg Arena," a security incident occurred when an unidentified man tried to break through to the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Oblast, Denis Pasler. According to reports, the governor was taking selfies with citizens when a man in a blue tracksuit ran toward him aggressively, but was stopped by security guards just a few meters away.
Most Russian media outlets, including RIA Novosti, which is identified with the government, and Readovka, which displays pro-government positions, described the incident as an attempted assault that was quickly thwarted without anyone being injured. Baza noted that the security guards acted "immediately" to neutralize the suspect, who was handed over to the police for questioning.
There are varying accounts regarding the state of the attacker. Official sources and media reports such as Kontext claimed that the man was "in a state of intoxication." On the other hand, Agency.News, which maintains a critical stance, speculated on the attacker's identity as a "labor migrant," while linking the underlying tension to the governor's decision to impose employment restrictions on migrants in the region about two months ago.
In an attempt to calm the atmosphere, the governor's office told Podyem: "It is hard to even call this an assault. The governor didn't even notice it." Meduza, which is defined as an opposition media outlet, provided similar reports highlighting that the governor continued with his schedule as usual. At the same time, more extremist Telegram channels such as Zone AP used the incident to express sharp criticism of migration policy and the functioning of the authorities in the region.
