[95631] The Shin Bet Director's remarks storm: Is Eilat the next "October 7th"?
Is Eilat at risk? The storm over closed-door discussions at the Shin Bet
Sensational headlines caused a storm in the security establishment this week, after it was reported by several channels that the head of the Shin Bet warned in closed-door discussions that "the next October 7th will be in Eilat." According to Hadashot MeHashetach on Telegram and a report by Josh Breiner in 'Haaretz', the head of the service identified the city as a security vulnerability due to its geographical location and ordered increased intelligence gathering out of fear of a combined ground or maritime attack.
Almog Boker Updates added that the assessments point to concerns over an invasion from the Jordanian border. However, there is significant reservation within the security establishment regarding these reports. Sources noted that there is skepticism regarding the existence of solid intelligence information pointing to such a scenario, and that the matters are sometimes presented in an exaggerated manner.
In an official response, the Shin Bet clarified that this is not a concrete warning, but a routine learning process: "A few months ago, as part of the process of entering the role and learning the various threats, the head of the Shin Bet conducted a tour in Eilat... We emphasize that there is no information or concrete warning, but rather a thorough operational planning."
In the political arena, Adi Carmi, a former senior Shin Bet official, addressed the issue in Political Arena and expressed criticism of the very nature of it being discussed in the media: "I will say honestly that I am more worried about the leaker than the headline. I know he conducted a tour of the sector a few months ago, and that they discussed the threats."
