Storm at the top: Suspicions of witness harassment in the police and DIPI affair

The law enforcement system is in an uproar following a series of caution investigations against senior police and IPS officials. Head of the Human Resources Division in the Israel Police, Commissioner Alona Shoshan, was interrogated at the Competition Authority on suspicion of "witness harassment," after she recorded Brigadier General Lior Abodraham, the head of the police spokesperson's division, who serves as a key witness against IPS Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi.

Allegations of improper ties and unusual statements

According to Avishai Grinzaig, Commissioner Shoshan provided recordings raising serious allegations regarding Brigadier General Abodraham's ties with senior officials in the Department of Internal Police Investigations (DIPI). In the exposed recordings, Abodraham is heard speaking crudely about a prosecutor in the case and claiming he received preferential treatment from the head of DIPI due to assistance he provided to her. According to Hadar Milhama, which reported on the incident based on publications by "Haaretz" and Grinzaig, IPS Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi was also interrogated under caution on suspicion that he planned the recording of the witness together with Commissioner Shoshan.

Criticism of the conduct of the enforcement system

In parallel to the investigations, Adv. Uri Korv, legal counsel for IPS Commissioner Yaakobi, is leveling sharp criticism at the system. In a report by Yinon Magal, associated with critical views toward the judicial and enforcement system, Adv. Korv is quoted as saying: "It seems there are those who are equal before the law, and those who are more equal." According to him, instead of investigating the suspicions of obstruction of justice at DIPI, the system chose to investigate the IPS Commissioner himself. Adv. Korv emphasized that the claims of obstruction of justice by DIPI were realized in his view, and that "DIPI's conduct was not examined in-depth as seemingly emerges from the recordings."

As of this time, Grinzaig and Hadar Milhama reported that while senior police and IPS officials were interrogated under caution, senior DIPI officials were not summoned for questioning on the matter. Brigadier General Abodraham chose not to respond to the serious allegations attributed to him.
