Coalition crisis: United Torah Judaism threatens opposition to the Communications Law
Against the backdrop of internal coalition tensions, United Torah Judaism Chairman Yitzhak Goldknopf announced today (May 14, 2026) to Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi that his party will not be able to support the Communications Law.
According to the report by Dafna Liel, who is identified with positions supporting Netanyahu and the coalition but reports on political difficulties, the reason for the step is the fact that "the issue of Sabbath desecration was not regulated in the Communications Law", and this is in contrast to earlier agreements made with the Haredi party.
Zirat News also noted that Goldknopf clarified to Minister Karhi that there will be no support for the law as long as the substantive issue from their perspective is not resolved. This is another chapter in the government's difficulties in passing controversial legislation with its Haredi partners.
