The "Sun Dogs" phenomenon in the skies of Israel
Across the country, extensive documentation of an impressive optical phenomenon in the sky, known as "sun dogs," was reported today (05/02/2026). The phenomenon was observed by many citizens, with the first reports coming from the Weather News Telegram channel, which noted that it is a halo appearing around the sun as a result of an encounter between sun rays and cirrus clouds composed of ice particles.
According to Weather Ltd., this is an "atmospheric optical phenomenon in which two bright spots are observed on both sides of the sun," often accompanied by a halo known as a "22-degree halo." The channel explains that the spots appear when the sun is low in the sky and the light passes through atmospheric ice crystals.
Beyond its aesthetic value, Weather Ltd. warns that the phenomenon is not just visual: "This phenomenon signals to us that the cold, and also a cool/cold system, is approaching us rapidly."
The News Arena channel also confirmed the reports, emphasizing that it is a natural encounter between ice particles in the clouds and the sun's rays. In total, the reports received exposure of thousands of views among the local follower audience.
