Ahead of the Shiite month of mourning (Muharram), videos of bereaved mothers from Iran have been uploaded to social media, using the period to protest the killing of their children during the protests that erupted in January 2026. The videos received wide exposure on social media, with the Vahid Online channel reporting on two prominent cases of mothers weaving their personal grief with resistance to the regime.

In one video, the mother of Mani Safrapoor, an 18-year-old from Lahijan, is documented crying at her son's grave during a religious mourning procession. According to Vahid Online, the young man was killed on January 8, 2026, by security forces' gunfire in the Salsabil neighborhood of Tehran.

At the same time, documentation was published of Hajar Naderi, mother of Matin Parvizi, who was shot to death in the head on January 8, 2026, in Zanjan. In a report by Vahid Online and in a report by the Payam Iran channel, the mother is quoted as saying: "I did not teach my son only 'Ya Hossein' and thirst, I taught him to stand against brutal force." Naderi added that this year she will mourn for "the children of the homeland who were killed treacherously" and her prayer is that Imam Hossein himself will mourn for these young people.

Both reporting channels are identified with opposition to the Iranian regime, and emphasize the narrative that Iranian security forces bear direct responsibility for the deaths of the young protesters. The reports do not present an official response from the authorities in Iran to these events.
