[82370] Political drama: Trump and Netanyahu discuss forming an agreement with Iran amidst tensions in Lebanon
Reports of advanced contacts for signing an agreement between the US and Iran, with President Trump expressing anger over Israeli strikes in Beirut that delayed the move.
Dramatic contacts for signing a US-Iran agreement
Over the last weekend, reports of a breakthrough in contacts between Washington and Tehran intensified. According to Vahid Online, US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and updated him that there is a high feasibility of signing an agreement within the coming hours.
Trump's criticism of Israel
The military tension between Israel and Lebanon has created direct political friction. According to reports by Iran International (known for a critical line toward the Iranian regime), Trump expressed frustration and anger over the IDF strike in Beirut, claiming that this was an event that "disrupted the timing" of the agreement. Trump was quoted in Axios as saying that the strike delayed the planned signing, and urged all sides to "step back" to allow the diplomatic process to be completed.
Reactions from the Israeli political system
Inside Israel, the reports sparked a storm. Fars International (a news agency identified with the Revolutionary Guards) reported that the Security Cabinet convened to discuss the "regional development," while citing sources defining the emerging agreement as "contrary to Israel's interests." On the other hand, Al Arabiya Farsi notes that Netanyahu requested an urgent meeting with Trump, against the backdrop of the President's statements that he intends to open the Strait of Hormuz and enter into more detailed negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.
Defense Minister Israel Katz responded firmly to the reports on the contacts, emphasizing that "Israel must ensure its independent operational capability" to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, this according to a report by Fars News.
