French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday, June 1, 2026, that the French Navy had carried out a boarding and inspection operation of the Russian oil tanker "Tagore" in international waters. According to reports from Iran International, the operation took place on Sunday morning with the assistance of allies, including the UK, while adhering to international navigation laws.
Macron stated that the action was intended to stop vessels assisting in funding Russia's war in Ukraine by bypassing sanctions. The President added that "the activities of these ships are unacceptable" and that they pose "a threat to the environment and to everyone's security," statements widely cited by Fars International and Foreign Policy and Ansarollah Islamic Resistance of Yemen.
Conversely, Russia reacted with fury to the incident. The Russian Embassy in France, as reported by Akharin Khabar, claimed that Paris did not inform them regarding the arrest and refused to provide information on the fate of Russian citizens who were on board, including the captain. On the official level, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov labeled the operation "illegal" and stated that it is a "prime example of international piracy."
Media outlets close to the Russian and Iranian establishment, such as Sputnik Afghanistan, emphasized that Russia is expected to take future steps to ensure the security of its maritime shipments in response to what they define as an attempt to punish Moscow for its policies in Ukraine.
