Maritime Tensions and Domestic Policy in Iran

In conflicting reports published today, May 14, 2026, a complex picture emerges regarding control over the Strait of Hormuz. The Revolutionary Guards, through Iranian state media, report that "since last night, 30 vessels have passed through the Strait of Hormuz with the approval of the Revolutionary Guards". This report was echoed by many official and local channels such as Saberin News and Akharin Khabar.

Conversely, Iran International – an opposition channel broadcasting from outside Iran – presents the opposite picture. According to their report, "while American security officials report the continuation of the naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz", the state reports in Iran are attempting to create an appearance of full control. This is a fundamental gap in narratives between Western sources and those identified with the regime in Tehran.

On the domestic economic level, Iran's Ministry of Roads and Urban Development announced that by the end of June, about 40,000 housing units will be launched as part of the 'National Housing' project. Additionally, it was published that the cash subsidies ('Yaraneh') for the month of April have been paid to deciles 1 through 3, a step intended to provide relief to the weaker sectors of society in light of the tense economic situation.
