Iranian authorities have executed Mohammad Abbasi, a detainee from the nationwide protests, after denying him a final meeting with his family.
Controversial Execution at Qezel Hesar Prison
On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Mohammad Abbasi, one of the detainees from the nationwide protests that took place in December 2025, was executed at Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. According to Vahid Online, the judiciary of the Islamic Republic confirmed that the sentence was carried out following an accusation of murdering a security forces member, following the Supreme Court's approval and the "blood heirs' request" to carry out the "Qisas" (blood retaliation) sentence.
Human rights organizations and media outlets critical of the regime, including Iran International and Payam-e Iran, reported that prison authorities employed a controversial tactic: they summoned Abbasi's family for a final visit, but after their arrival, they denied them the meeting. The family members were informed of his death by telephone only after they had left the prison complex.
According to reports from Payam-e Iran and the Iran Human Rights Monitor website, Abbasi was sentenced to death in the Tehran Revolutionary Court presided over by Judge Abolqasem Salavati, while he and his daughter, Fatemeh Abbasi, suffered "severe pressure and torture" in order to extract forced confessions from them. Fatemeh Abbasi, who is being held in Evin Prison, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for her involvement in the case.
Sources affiliated with the Iranian opposition claim that the trial was conducted without access to a lawyer throughout the legal proceedings. Official and pro-government news channels, such as Khabar Fouri News and Iran and America Breaking News™, presented the execution as the fulfillment of a judicial ruling for the murder of a police officer, while highlighting Abbasi's affiliation with the protest detainees.
