[58713] Reports of bread price hikes in Iran: Authorities deny
A storm on social media surrounding the rise in bread prices amid sweeping denials from senior Iranian government officials.
Official denial: There is no rise in bread prices in Iran
Against the backdrop of reports circulated in the last day on social media regarding an official price hike for bread products, official sources were quick to reassure the public. According to اخبارفوری خبرفوری جنگ امریکا فوری, a channel known for covering current affairs quickly and sometimes sensationally, rumors were circulated that "نان هم رسما گران شد" (bread has also officially become more expensive), which led to panic among citizens in the streets.
Conversely, the head of the task force for flour and bread affairs rejected the reports outright. As reported in آخرین خبر and آخرین خبر لرستان, the channels presented an official clarification stating that "the new prices circulating on social media are incorrect, and no new tariff has yet been approved". According to the sources, even though the Consumer and Producer Protection Organization received an examination of production costs as part of the annual procedure, no official decision has been made on the matter.
The channel حامیان پزشکیان, which is traditionally identified with supporters of President Masoud Pezeshkian and presents a line aligned with official government positions, also emphasized that "the bread price hike has been refuted". According to them, "the Chamber of Guilds has denied any announcement regarding a new price."
As of now, it seems there is a gap between the rumors circulated to the public and the statements by the authorized parties, as the authorities attempt to contain economic uncertainty and prevent social unrest regarding the central staple product in the country.
