Progress in discussions on prisoner transfers between Iran and Afghanistan

During an official meeting held on May 3, 2026, representatives of Iran and the Taliban leadership in Afghanistan discussed renewing prisoner extradition procedures. According to the Telegram channel 'اخبار جنگ | ایران | افغانستان', Fazal Mohammad Haqqani, head of the embassy of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Tehran, met with Askar Jalalian, the Iranian Deputy Minister of Justice for Human Rights and International Affairs. The focus of the talks was "increasing cooperation on legal and judicial issues between the two countries."

As part of the contacts, the parties examined the possibility of "starting the second round of transferring Afghan prisoners from Iran to Afghanistan." The 'Sputnik Afghanistan' channel, which is associated with positions close to the Kremlin and covers the Central Asia region, confirmed that special emphasis was placed in the meeting on strengthening legal and judicial ties between Tehran and Kabul.
