[96511] Environmental tragedy in Turkey: A man lit a barbecue inside a protected sea turtle nest
Environmental failure in Antalya: Sea turtle hatchlings killed due to criminal negligence
A grave case of damage to protected natural values occurred on the beaches of Kumluca in Antalya, Turkey. According to reports on the Telegram channels Son Dakika Haberler Gündem and Son Dakika Haberleri Türkiye, an unidentified individual lit a barbecue inside one of the protective cages placed on the beach for the nests of Caretta caretta sea turtles, which are in danger of extinction.
According to Son Dakika Haberleri, the cages were installed on the beach for the explicit purpose of marking the location of the eggs and protecting them from human interference. The sites are marked with clear warning signs, making the act particularly egregious.
Son Dakika Haberler Gündem reported that "a combination of negligence and lack of awareness led to the death of turtle hatchlings" that were supposed to hatch from the damaged nest. The reports, coming from a series of Turkish news channels reporting on current events in real-time, have sparked widespread outrage on social media over the harm caused to protected animals.
As of now, no arrests have been reported in the case, but the incidents highlight the difficulty in enforcing the protection of sea turtle nesting sites in active tourist areas.
