[96495] Stormy weather in Ukraine: Thunderstorm alerts in Kyiv and fears of a severe heatwave
Emergency authorities in Ukraine have declared a state of alert due to thunderstorms and hail expected in the Kyiv region, while synopticians warn of extreme heatwaves expected next week.
Extreme weather alerts in Kyiv and Ukraine
Today, June 23, 2026, the Kyiv region and other parts of Ukraine are experiencing severe weather conditions. According to the Ukrainian Meteorological Service, a yellow risk level (Level I) has been declared following forecasts for thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds of 15-20 m/s. Authorities, including the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, are warning residents of possible power supply disruptions and traffic difficulties, and recommend staying away from trees and utility poles.
Simultaneously with reports of the current storm, local news channels such as Times of Ukraine and Україна Online report that a sharp rise in temperatures is expected next week, when in some parts of the country they could reach up to 40 degrees Celsius. This forecast is published against the backdrop of a heavy European heatwave known as a "heat dome," although experts from UA Stream clarify that extreme anomalies of the same level are not expected within the borders of Ukraine.
The public discussion regarding the weather is accompanied by clear safety guidelines. Kyiv City Hall has published emergency numbers for reporting fallen trees or road flooding. At the same time, media channels such as UA Stream note that while part of the country is dealing with storms and rain, other regions are experiencing processes of air front exchanges, leading to significant temperature differences between regions.
Despite the alarming reports about the "extreme heat," UA Stream sought to reassure the public and note that conditions remain within the framework of a typical Ukrainian summer, unlike the extreme heatwave affecting Western Europe. The public is asked to continue following notifications from the Meteorological Service (UkrHydrometCenter) until the end of the day.
