[93309] Rising tensions between Poland and Ukraine: Reports of xenophobia towards refugees
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warns of an alarming rise in incidents of violence and bullying against Ukrainians in Poland, while Polish Defense Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz warns of a deterioration in relations between the countries.
Deterioration in Polish-Ukrainian relations: Fear of a wave of xenophobia
Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, warned today of a significant rise in "anti-Ukrainianism" within Poland. According to reports from Всевидящее ОКО: Україна, Оперативний ЗСУ and Ukraine NOW, this involves a wave of physical assaults, humiliations, and bullying against Ukrainian children in Polish schools. Sybiha defined these phenomena as a "real danger to the security of citizens" and called for urgent diplomatic handling of the issue.
At the same time, the Polish Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, responded to the situation in a pessimistic tone. As published in Цензор.НЕТ, the Minister claimed that relations between the countries are "heading in a very bad direction" and that the escalation in rhetoric and tension serves the common enemy. He noted that criticism within the Polish public regarding the scope of aid to Ukraine is growing, alongside voices calling for the return of refugees to their homeland.
Additional sources on Ukrainian television such as КЛОЧОК emphasize that the Ukrainian Foreign Minister is calling for an end to emotions and a return to cooperation mechanisms based on shared political will. However, there are other critical angles pointing to deep-seated roots for the tension, such as historical disputes over the "Volhynia massacre." On the Андрющенко Time channel, a claim was raised that current Polish policy resembles Russian patterns of behavior, and that tensions may deepen after the war ends, as the importance of logistical traffic through Poland decreases.
The current situation is defined by Ukrainian officials as critical, with media channels identified with the government in Kyiv, such as UA Stream, emphasizing that these are systematic expressions of xenophobia that require an immediate response from Warsaw.
