[93006] Emergency discussion on Lebanon added to the agenda of the US-Iran summit in Switzerland
In the shadow of growing tensions, US and Iranian delegations in Switzerland will open their talks with an urgent discussion on the escalation of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Dramatic development in the Swiss talks: The discussion on Lebanon has been moved to the top of the agenda
At the opening of the critical round of talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland, media outlets Iran International and CBS News reported that a schedule for an emergency meeting regarding the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been added. According to the sources, this is the first topic to be discussed before the parties turn to nuclear and economic issues.
CNN quoted a diplomatic source as saying that "the Lebanon file is the first item on the priority list" for the Iranian delegation. Parallel reports in Akhbarin Khabar noted that Tehran does not view these talks as a formal continuation of the previous memorandum of understanding, as long as a stable ceasefire in Lebanon has not been achieved.
At the same time, DW Persian notes that the US was represented by Vice President J.D. Vance, while the Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Al Arabiya Farsi reported extensively on the composition of the Iranian delegation, which includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials from the economic and security sectors, in an attempt to forge broader agreements.
Experts at DW Persian assessed that Washington's agreement to discuss Lebanon within the framework of these talks indicates a shift in American strategy toward Iran. Conversely, Iranian sources identified with regime lines, such as Fars International, emphasize that ending "Israeli attacks in Lebanon" is a key condition for any progress in the talks, this against the backdrop of reports in Khabarfoori that Israel ordered a temporary ceasefire in the sector.
The talks, which are taking place in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, are accompanied by the presence of mediators from Qatar and Pakistan, with the Prime Minister of Pakistan and General Asim Munir expected to participate in the discussions on Sunday.
