Crime Wave in Mersin: Violent Robbery and Fraud Scandal
On June 20, 2026, serious criminal incidents were reported in the city of Mersin, Turkey, raising concerns regarding personal safety and the sophistication of local criminals.
Armed Robbery in the City Center
According to a report by the gdh channel, two helmeted suspects attacked a passerby in the Cami Şerif district. The attackers sprayed pepper spray into the victim's face and robbed him of a bag that allegedly contained approximately $250,000. According to Gündem Hattı, eyewitnesses reported that the robbers carried a handgun and managed to flee the scene after identifying themselves to passersby as security forces, which led to a delay in the public's response.
Massive Fraud Against a Member of Parliament
In a separate and disturbing incident, İYİ Party MP Burhanettin Kocamaz fell victim to a sophisticated fraud. According to reports by Gündem Haber, Kocamaz handed over to the scammers, who posed as police officers, "approximately 10 kilograms of gold, 2 million 375 thousand Turkish Liras, 68 thousand dollars, and 1,900 euros."
The scammers used the password "Bayrak" (Flag) to gain Kocamaz's trust. After realizing he had been a victim of fraud, the MP filed a complaint with the police, which led to the arrest of one of the suspects inside a taxi in Istanbul, while he was in possession of the loot.
