Mutual Aerial Escalation: Extensive Drone Attacks in Ukraine and Severe Damage to Oil Refineries in Russia
During the day of June 20, 2026, Ukraine and Russia experienced an intense wave of mutual aerial strikes. According to reports in the Times of Ukraine, which demonstrates a pro-Ukrainian stance, Russia launched a massive attack that included drone launches from several locations with the aim of "depleting" Ukrainian air defense systems. The Air Command of Ukraine reported that 99 drones were launched towards Ukraine overnight, 92 of which were intercepted, although a number of hits were reported, including at a gas station in the Odesa region.
At the same time, Ukraine continues its warfare against Russian energy infrastructure. Satellite imagery released by Radio Svoboda revealed heavy damage at the Moscow oil refinery following repeated attacks, including the destruction of fuel tanks and refining facilities. The military channel Мілітарний noted that Ukrainian defense forces also attacked energy infrastructure in the occupied Crimean Peninsula. Additionally, an unusual strike deep into Russia was reported against the oil refinery in Tyumen, which is located about 2,000 km from the border, an attack described by Реальна Війна as a step that will impact Russian fuel supply.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defined the attacks on the oil refineries in Russia as a "just response" to the Russian attacks, and called on Russia to take diplomatic steps to end the war, as reported by Radio Svoboda. On the other hand, official Russian channels, as cited by Ukrainian sources, tried to minimize the damage and even attributed some of it to errors by Russian air defense systems. The local market in Moscow is already reporting a sharp rise in fuel prices as a result of the damage to the oil refineries.
