Security embarrassment in Kyiv: Eavesdropping on anti-corruption investigators

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has launched a criminal investigation after discovering equipment intended for "collecting classified information" at the home of one of its heads of detective departments. According to reports, neighbors stated that individuals presenting themselves as law enforcement officials approached them and claimed that a "Russian spy" lived in the apartment below them, a claim that was apparently used as a cover story to install the equipment.

NABU confirmed that they identified one of the individuals involved as an active employee of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). Prominent media outlets, including Ukrainska Pravda and hromadske, emphasized that the targeted detective is currently investigating a series of high-profile corruption cases, involving customs offenses and the involvement of senior state officials.

On the Telegram channel Berezovyy sok, known for its critical stance toward the Presidential Office, a sharp hypothesis was raised suggesting that such an action by the SBU would not have been carried out without an order from high levels within Volodymyr Zelenskyy's "Presidential Office." The channel wonders how Ukraine will explain the incident to its international partners.

Other sources, including Lachen pyshe and ҐРУНТ, emphasized the gravity of the event, noting that it constitutes "threats to the independence and effectiveness of anti-corruption investigations." 24 Kanal concluded that this is an affair that places a large question mark over the cooperation between law enforcement agencies in Ukraine in the midst of the war.
