US move against officials in Lebanon

The US Department of the Treasury announced today, June 18, 2026, the imposition of significant personal sanctions against two key figures in the Lebanese political system identified with the Axis of Resistance. According to a report in Abu Ali Express, known for an editorial line that sharply criticizes Hezbollah and Iran, the sanctions were imposed on Mahmoud Qamati, Deputy Chairman of Hezbollah's Political Council, and on Suleiman Frangieh, head of the Christian-Maronite "Marada" movement.

Frangieh, who was previously Hezbollah's preferred candidate for the Lebanese presidency but failed in his attempt to be elected, is considered one of the organization's most central political allies. In Hadashot 360 they noted that Washington justifies the move by stating that the sanctions are aimed at "individuals linked to Hezbollah's activities and its political influence in Lebanon."

On the other hand, the Lebanese channel Asrar Lubnan | Secrets of Lebanon – which tends toward a critical position regarding American policy – defined the step as "an escalation in American intervention in Lebanese politics." According to them, the sanctions constitute a direct response to the "clear concerns in the Lebanese government" regarding the organization's conduct and its influence on the country.

The American step reflects the ongoing pressure exerted by the administration in Washington on Hezbollah's political and economic support networks within Lebanon, in an attempt to reduce the organization's grip on centers of power in the country.
