[89471] Escalation at the front and at sea: Ukraine hit a Russian oil tanker and critical logistical infrastructure
Broad Ukrainian offensive: A Russian oil tanker and strategic bridges sustained damage
During June 16 and the night between June 17, 2026, the defense forces of Ukraine carried out a series of coordinated strikes against Russian military and logistical assets. According to the General Staff of the Army of Ukraine, the primary target in the Black Sea was the tanker "FINA A" (IMO 9283306), which belongs to Russia's "shadow fleet" used to circumvent international sanctions on oil exports.
According to reports on Ukraine NOW, the tanker is subject to sanctions by the European Union, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ukraine. As of this hour, the Ukrainian army confirms the strike and notes that "the degree of damage is under investigation." Simultaneously, the Telegram channel OperativnoZSU reported targeted strikes against two vehicle bridges in the Kherson region — over the North Crimean Canal near the settlement of Stavky and in the area of Vynohradne — which were used by Russian forces to transport troops and weaponry.
Ukrainian operations also included deep-strike and occupied-territory targets. As noted on Hromadske, the forces struck a command and observation post in the area of Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk, alongside hitting several drone (UAV) command centers in the regions of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, and even inside Russian territory, in the Kursk region.
On the political front, the effort against Russia's economic systems has also expanded to the international arena. According to a report by Radio Svoboda and other sources, the UK imposed a record fine of over one million pounds sterling on the company "Sabre Corp" for violating sanctions, after the company provided services to a Russian airline. This is a significant move by London aimed at "moving from statements to actual punishment," as described on Andriysh Time.
While Ukrainian sources present the strikes as a systematic operation to weaken Russian combat capabilities, DW Ukraine noted that the Russian occupation governor in Kherson, Saldo, claimed in contrast that his forces "repelled a massive drone attack" on the region's bridges, reflecting the conflicting narratives that accompany the ongoing fighting.
