As part of the EU leaders' summit taking place in Brussels between June 18-19, 2026, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is expected to present a candidate for the position of EU Special Representative for negotiations with Russia regarding a settlement to the war in Ukraine.
According to a report by СУСПІЛЬНЕ НОВИНИ (which takes a distinctly pro-Ukrainian stance), Meloni believes this is a critical step. She emphasized that the candidate for the role should come from a "medium-sized country" within the EU, and not from one of the major powers, in order to facilitate reaching an agreement.
Meloni explained her position on the matter, as quoted in Новини.LIVE: "If we want to achieve a result of this kind, I think it would be very difficult to propose someone from one of the largest countries in Europe. I believe it would complicate the deal. Therefore, I would turn to the medium-sized countries of the EU."
