[88309] Large-scale Russian air attack on Ukraine: dozens of casualties and fatalities
Russia launched a combined, massive attack overnight using hundreds of drones and ballistic missiles against civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine, which claimed the lives of several civilians.
A night of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine
Overnight, June 18, 2026, Ukraine experienced a large-scale air attack. According to the Air Force of Ukraine, Russian forces launched 7 "Iskander-M/S-400" ballistic missiles and 239 suicide drones. UNIAN news agency (via the SUSPILNE channel) reports that air defense systems intercepted or disrupted 216 targets, but impacts were recorded from seven missiles (two confirmed as direct hits) and 26 drones in 9 different locations across the country.
Severe loss of life and infrastructure damage
The city of Sumy suffered the hardest blow. TSN channel reports fatalities and injuries resulting from strikes on residential buildings and the private sector. ZN.UA, a channel known for its detailed and analytical reporting on the war, updates that in the Sumy region, three people were killed and twelve injured in a broad wave of attacks, which included hits to a gas station, a stable, and public buildings. UA Stream channel notes that this is one of a series of intense attacks carried out in the last 24 hours.
Damage to the energy and industrial sector
In the Poltava region, the attack caused heavy damage to energy and industrial infrastructure. TSN reports that technological equipment and an administrative building were damaged, with one person evacuated to a hospital. At the same time, Censor.NET, a Ukrainian media outlet highlighting the war effort, confirmed that loud explosions were also heard in the capital Kyiv, following a barrage of ballistic missiles.
Theater Summary
Various Ukrainian sources, including ҐРУНТ and BRATCHUK, emphasize the combined effort of air defense units, including aviation, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups. Despite the impressive scale of interception, the civilian damage and impact on critical infrastructure illustrate the continuation of the Russian strategy of waging a war of attrition against the Ukrainian rear.
