[87916] Exposure of the Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the US: Ceasefire and massive economic aid
Exposure of the Islamabad Agreement: A framework for restoring relations between Iran and the US
On June 18, 2026, the details of a dramatic memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, mediated by Pakistan, were revealed. According to روزنامه وطن امروز, a newspaper identified with the conservative and establishment line in Iran, the agreement outlines an "immediate and permanent end to military operations" on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and a mutual commitment to refrain from the use of force.
Highlights of the agreement
According to the publication in روزنامه وطن امروز, the memorandum includes 14 main articles, including:
- End of sanctions: The US commits to act for the cancellation of all sanctions, including those of the UN, as well as to release frozen Iranian assets.
- Rehabilitation plan: The US committed to working with regional partners on an economic development and rehabilitation plan for Iran in the amount of "at least 300 billion dollars."
- The nuclear issue: Iran reaffirms that it "will not produce or acquire nuclear weapons" and agrees to regulate the status of enriched materials under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
American clarifications
Conversely, Iran International, an opposition channel that often presents a critical narrative toward the regime in Tehran, reported on a briefing held by American officials regarding the meaning of the agreement. According to Iran International, American officials clarified that the 300-billion-dollar plan does not constitute a direct financial commitment on the part of the US, but rather is intended to "provide the possibility for investment and granting the necessary licenses."
In addition, American administration officials emphasized that there is a "central misunderstanding" regarding the lifting of sanctions, and clarified that "no lifting of sanctions will take place without the implementation of Iran's nuclear commitments." The memorandum stipulates that the parties will strive for a final agreement within a period of 60 days, while establishing a special mechanism for monitoring and verifying the commitments of all parties.
