[86609] Dramatic Memorandum of Understanding between the US and Iran: Ceasefire and comprehensive sanctions removal
Reports of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran that includes a regional ceasefire, unfreezing of funds, and the removal of sanctions, a move sparking intense controversy within the political and security establishment.
Principles Agreement between Washington and Tehran
According to reports by DD Geopolitics and the Jewish Truth Archive, a version of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the US and Iran has been published, declaring an "immediate and final end to the war on all fronts." The agreement, expected to be signed officially on Friday in Switzerland, includes a US commitment to lift sanctions on oil exports, unfreeze Iranian funds, and establish a $300 billion reconstruction fund. In return, Iran has committed to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and refraining from producing nuclear weapons – a statement whose credibility many in the West doubt.
Harsh criticism and analysis of the moves
The channel Abu Ali Express in English – known for its critical stance towards Iran and such agreements – claims that "the Americans have surrendered completely." According to the channel, Iran achieved all its economic and international goals in exchange for a merely declarative statement on the nuclear issue, which was defined by them as a strategic victory for Tehran. At the same time, former US Vice President Mike Pence, as quoted in Jewish News 24, attacked the agreement and called it an "appeasement" that endangers national security since it contains no demands to dismantle missile programs or stop support for terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Regional implications
According to Israel Realtime, which closely monitors Israel's security interests, the ceasefire also includes the front in Lebanon, with a multinational committee expected to oversee the withdrawal and stability in the region. However, there is a constant fear of unexpected Iranian reactions, and reports of Iranian drones in the Strait of Hormuz illustrate the fragility of the new understandings. On the internal political level in the US, the Senate rejected an attempt to limit President Trump's powers in managing the campaign against Iran, which gives the administration broad maneuvering room in implementing the agreement.
