On the morning of Tuesday, June 26, 2026, the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran executed Javad Zamani and Abolfazl Saadi, two citizens who were arrested during the wave of protests that swept the country in January 2026. According to a report by the Mizan News Agency, affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, the two were convicted of "Moharebeh" (waging war against God) and "Efsad-fil-Arz" (corruption on earth).
According to Mohammad-Sadegh Akbari, president of the Semnan Province Court, the two were defined as "armed insurgents" and were accused of using cold and hot weapons, burning public buildings, and harming national security. Government media outlets, including Sepah Pasdaran, released "confession" videos of the two, in which their faces were blurred, as substantiation for the state's accusations against them.
Conversely, opposition and international media outlets harshly criticized the move. Iran International noted that the execution took place at a time when public attention was focused on sports games, which they claimed was intended to weaken the protest. Deutsche Welle in Persian reported that this is part of a wave of intensifying political repression that includes swift trials lacking a fair legal basis, pointing to data from human rights organizations regarding a spike in the use of the death penalty since the start of the military conflict in February 2026.
Organizations such as the Association for Human Rights in Iran warned that this process is part of a "killing machine" that uses the death penalty as a means of political deterrence against opponents of the regime. As of now, no details have been released regarding the appeal proceedings or independent legal documentation confirming the prosecution's version, which raises many doubts among human rights communities regarding the validity of the verdict.
