A B-52 Stratofortress strategic bomber crashed today, June 16, 2026, shortly after taking off from Edwards Air Force Base in the state of California. According to reports from CNN, cited by most Ukrainian media outlets, all eight crew members on board the aircraft perished in the disaster. The crew consisted of a mix of military personnel, government employees, and civilian contractors.
According to a Radio Svoboda report, the aircraft was conducting a "planned test mission" as part of a radar modernization program. Officials at the base stated that "initial indications suggest the accident left no chance for survival," as noted by Suspilne.
Ukrainian media outlets noted that this aircraft, which began its service in 1955, is a symbol of American strategic aviation, capable of carrying nuclear and conventional weapons. UA Stream added that this is the deadliest disaster involving an aircraft of this type since 1982.
While most sources reported the event as a tragic training accident, the Russian channel Zone AP chose to present a hostile and unusual stance, calling the event a "response" to previous incidents involving Russian bombers, while using derogatory language towards the USA. As of now, the cause of the crash has not yet been determined and the investigation is expected to continue for several months.
