Wave of arrests in Turkey: Silivri Mayor remanded in custody over corruption scandal

As part of a criminal investigation conducted by the Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the mayor, Bora Balcıoğlu, was arrested alongside nine other suspects. According to reports in Sondakika Haber Gündem, the arrests were carried out following suspicions of "irregularities in various transactions and operations" conducted within the Silivri Municipality.

Gündem Haber reported that out of 11 suspects brought before a judge for a remand hearing, 10 of them, including Balcıoğlu, were sent to prison. Haber Gündem emphasized that the affair follows proactive enforcement actions by the State Prosecutor's Office to uncover corruption in local authorities.

Simultaneously, Haber Gündem revealed that a separate and broader investigation is being conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. As part of a nationwide operation across four different districts, 27 additional suspects were arrested. The affair concerns "violations of zoning and construction laws" and the granting of occupancy permits contrary to building regulations and approved plans.

As of now, these are two separate but related lines of investigation, pointing to a concerted effort by law enforcement authorities in Turkey to address integrity in the fields of real estate and urban planning.
