[84155] Zelensky offers Putin an urgent meeting at the G7 summit following a massive Russian attack
Zelensky calls for summit talks in the shadow of a dramatic security escalation
In the midst of the G7 summit currently taking place (June 15-17) in the town of Evian-les-Bains, France, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had submitted an official proposal for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Times of Ukraine reports, Zelensky emphasized that the goal of the meeting is to discuss ending the war in the presence of leaders from the US and the European Union, including President Donald Trump and President Emmanuel Macron.
The Ukrainian initiative came immediately after a widespread Russian attack which, according to Політикан України reports, included the launch of about 70 missiles and hundreds of UAVs, causing heavy damage in the capital Kyiv, including damage to the heritage structure of Saint Sophia Cathedral (Lavra) and deaths among civilians and rescue forces. The President of Ukraine claimed, in a quote brought by Цензор.НЕТ, that the timing is not accidental: "Putin, with absolute cynicism, congratulated Trump (on his birthday) and immediately afterward launched a massive attack," assessing that Moscow waited for the conclusion of diplomatic talks before opening fire.
At the same time, ADASTRA ✨ reported on a 55-minute phone call between Putin and Trump. According to this source, which is identified with international analysis, the conversation was held in a "friendly" tone and included discussions on possible frameworks for regional agreements. However, Новини.LIVE note, citing sources in the President's Office in Ukraine, that Moscow has not yet replied affirmatively to the proposal for a meeting at the G7, and that "shelling is Putin's answer to some extent."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated in Цензор.НЕТ that G7 leaders will hold urgent discussions on "increasing pressure on Russia" in order to lead Putin to the negotiating table. On the other hand, domestic commentators such as Батальйон «Монако» and Ми Україна express great doubt regarding the Kremlin's willingness to change the course of the war, and point out that Russia uses communication with the West as a tactic to "buy time."
