Escalation in Lebanon: Israel attacked in Beirut, Iran threatens military response
The IDF attacked Hezbollah targets in the Dahiyeh in Beirut in response to fire toward the north; in Israel, preparations are underway for the possibility of a ballistic Iranian response that would jeopardize the emerging ceasefire agreement.
Peak tension: Israel attacks in Beirut and assessments of an Iranian response
Over the past 24 hours, the Middle East Spectator (which presents a critical view of Israel and the US) announced an Israeli strike in the Dahiyeh quarter of Beirut. According to reports, Israel attacked a Hezbollah headquarters in response to rocket and drone fire toward northern Israel. Security sources in Israel stated that the attack was intended to clarify Israel's "security doctrine" against the terrorist organization, while Jewish Truth Archive reports that at least three people were killed and 15 injured.
The political and security establishment in Israel is on high alert. According to reports on N12, the security establishment assesses that Iran might respond by launching ballistic missiles at Israeli territory, contrary to initial assessments which held that Tehran would choose to exercise restraint so as not to jeopardize the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) currently taking shape with the US. The "Haaretz" newspaper even went so far as to claim that "Israel miscalculated; Iran will respond" according to Middle East Spectator.
At the same time, Iranian officials are harshly criticizing the US and Israel. According to Jewish Truth Archive, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Dr. Ghalibaf, stated that the "good cop, bad cop" game between the powers has come to an end, and that the strike in Dahiyeh constitutes a fatal blow to the prospects for a peace agreement. Geopolitics Prime noted that President-elect Trump also expressed concern that the Israeli strikes could torpedo an impending deal between Tehran and Washington.
Despite the fear of escalation, sources close to the Israeli position, such as Amir Tsarfati, emphasize that this is a necessary action against Hezbollah's entrenchment in Lebanon. The IDF, according to reports in TabZ, updated the political and American echelon shortly before the strike, and is currently prepared for immediate response scenarios from Tehran and Hezbollah.
