Wave of investigations against senior officials of the Republican People's Party (CHP) in Turkey

The law enforcement system in Turkey is currently conducting two main lines of investigation against members of the main opposition party, the CHP. According to reports in Sputnik Türkiye and İhlas Haber Ajansı, a large-scale criminal investigation has been opened against the Buca Municipality in Izmir. Yesterday morning, security forces raided the municipality, and as part of an operation defined as a "giant corruption operation," 50 people were arrested, including Mayor Görkem Duman. According to a report by Sondakika Haber Gündem, the suspicions include "establishing a criminal organization, irregularities in planning and construction, bribery and receiving bribes."

At the same time, media channels identified with the government line in Turkey, including TRT Haber and A Haber, report that the Istanbul Public Prosecutor has ordered the collection of comprehensive information regarding 38 deputies in the party. As part of the investigation, data from MASAK (Financial Crimes Investigation Board), bank account movements, and social security records were requested for all deputies who participated in the 38th CHP Congress and their first-degree relatives.

The internal situation within the CHP appears tense against the backdrop of these events. Sondakika Haber Gündem quotes former parliament member Gürsel Tekin, who raised questions regarding the integrity of the party's procedures, noting that dozens of deputies are under legal restrictions, arrests, or open investigations. Opposition spokespeople, on the other hand, refer to these moves as an attempt at political pressure, while media outlets considered pro-government such as TGRT HABER emphasize the importance of "exposing economic irregularities."
