[79312] Storm surrounding the UN decision to include Israel on the blacklist of sexual violence
The UN's decision to include Israel on a blacklist alongside terrorist organizations has sparked outrage in Israel, while Hamas welcomes the move.
Outrage in Israel over its inclusion on the UN blacklist
The UN's decision to include the State of Israel on a blacklist of organizations and countries that perpetrate patterns of sexual violence in conflict zones has sparked harsh reactions within the political and diplomatic establishment in Israel. At the Jerusalem Center for Foreign Affairs (JCFA), which focuses on public diplomacy and the fight against antisemitism, the move is defined as a "new moral low." Dr. Fiamma Nirenstein from the center argues that it is a "colossal lie" and a deliberate attempt to create a false equivalence between Israel and murderous terrorist organizations such as Hamas and ISIS.
According to Dr. Nirenstein, the decision ignores the fact that Hamas turned sexual violence into a clear weapon of war on October 7, while in Israel any claim of this type is investigated under a functioning democratic legal system. She warns that this is another move as part of the "international effort to delegitimize the State of Israel."
On the other hand, Abu Ali Express channel, which emphasizes anti-Hamas and anti-Iranian narratives in its publications, cites an official Hamas proclamation welcoming the step. Hamas called the decision "additional documentation of the organized and horrific crimes" committed by the IDF, and called on the international community to take "practical deterrent steps" against Israel.
The reports highlight the abysmal gap between the narratives: while in Israel the move is seen as a historical and dangerous distortion, elements within Hamas are using the UN decision as a propaganda tool to strengthen their international legitimacy at the expense of the state.
