[79328] Sharp spike in inflation rates in Iran: Conflicting reports on official data
Surge in inflation in Iran: Official data raises questions
The Central Bank of Iran published official data stating that the inflation rate in the month of Ordibehesht (May 2026) stood at 53.9%. According to reports by the state news agency IRNA, this refers to the inflation rate in the 12 months ending in that month, compared to the same period last year.
These data were disseminated on various social networks, including Akhbar-e Fouri and Akharin Khabar, which noted that the point-to-point inflation reached 77%. However, these are sources with a general news reporting orientation, which relay government data without in-depth critical analysis.
Conversely, channels specializing in economic coverage present a sharper picture. The 'Akhbar-e Rooz-e Eghtesadi' channel, known for its criticism of government policy, claims that "inflation has become triple-digit" and that the Central Bank is effectively hiding data indicating a rate of 114%.
In addition, the "My City Eslamabad" channel provided further detail, according to which the consumer price index rose by 10% just in the last month alone, and that certain product groups recorded a surge of about 113.8% compared to last year, a figure that undermines the more moderate official report.
