[78463] Putin congratulated Pashinyan on his birthday against the backdrop of growing tension between Russia and Armenia
A congratulatory telegram in the shadow of a diplomatic crisis
On Sunday, June 1, 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent an official congratulatory telegram to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the occasion of his birthday. According to the Kremlin as reported by RIA Novosti, Putin noted that "relations between our countries and our peoples are traditionally friendly in nature" and added that Russia is interested in the continued development of these ties.
The message from Putin, which was also published by channels identified with the Russian administration such as TASS and Sputnik Blizhneye Zarubezhye, was received in a highly tense political environment. The KONTEXT channel, which presents a critical position toward Russia's foreign policy, noted that the greeting comes at a time when Russia has recalled its ambassador from Armenia for consultations, following Pashinyan's moves toward rapprochement with the European Union.
In addition to the diplomatic tension, authorities in Russia have imposed import restrictions on various Armenian products, including fruits, vegetables, flowers, and alcohol, a move that has been interpreted as economic punishment. The KONTEXT channel added that Russia and the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union have even demanded that Armenia hold a referendum regarding the continuation of its membership in the economic bloc versus joining the European Union.
On the side of the more extreme critics, the Zone AP channel (linked to the Russian sources) published a sharp opinion against Putin's gesture, arguing that Pashinyan is conducting a campaign based on "Russophobia" and the severing of ties with Moscow, and therefore an official greeting from the Russian President appears in their eyes to be a "disgrace."
